Photometry of comet 9P/Tempel 1 during the 2004/2005 approach and the Deep Impact module impact
The results of the 9P/Tempel 1 CARA (Cometary Archive for Amateur
Astronomers) observing campaign is presented. The main goal was to perform an
extended survey of the comet as a support to the Deep Impact (DI) Mission. CCD
R, I and narrowband aperture photometries were used to monitor the
quantity. The observed behaviour showed a peak of 310 cm 83 days before
perihelion, but we argue that it could be distorted by the phase effect, too.
The phase effect is roughly estimated around 0.0275 mag/degree, but we had no
chance for direct determination because of the very similar geometry of the
observed apparitions. The log-slope of was around -0.5 between about
180--100 days before the impact but evolved near the steady-state like 0 value
by the impact time. The DI module impact caused an about 60%{} increase in the
value of and a cloud feature in the coma profile which was observed
just after the event. The expansion of the ejecta cloud was consistent with a
fountain model with initial projected velocity of 0.2 km/s and =0.73.
Referring to a 25~000 km radius area centered on the nucleus, the total cross
section of the ejected dust was 8.2/ km 0.06 days after the impact, and
1.2/ km 1.93 days after the impact ( is the dust albedo). 5 days
after the event no signs of the impact were detected nor deviations from the
expected activity referring both to the average pre-impact behaviour and to the

Assessment of the Noise Reduction Potential of Advanced Subsonic Transport Concepts for NASA's Environmentally Responsible Aviation Project
Aircraft system noise is predicted for a portfolio of NASA advanced concepts with 2025 entry-into-service technology assumptions. The subsonic transport concepts include tube-and-wing configurations with engines mounted under the wing, over the wing nacelle integration, and a double deck fuselage with engines at a mid-fuselage location. Also included are hybrid wing body aircraft with engines upstream of the fuselage trailing edge. Both advanced direct drive engines and geared turbofan engines are modeled. Recent acoustic experimental information was utilized in the prediction for several key technologies. The 301-passenger class hybrid wing body with geared ultra high bypass engines is assessed at 40.3 EPNLdB cumulative below the Stage 4 certification level. Other hybrid wing body and unconventional tube-and-wing configurations reach levels of 33 EPNLdB or more below the certification level. Many factors contribute to the system level result; however, the hybrid wing body in the 301-passenger class, as compared to a tubeand- wing with conventional engine under wing installation, has 11.9 EPNLdB of noise reduction due to replacing reflection with acoustic shielding of engine noise sources. Therefore, the propulsion airframe aeroacoustic interaction effects clearly differentiate the unconventional configurations that approach levels close to or exceed the 42 EPNLdB goal
Localization by disorder in the infrared conductivity of (Y,Pr)Ba2Cu3O7 films
The ab-plane reflectivity of (Y{1-x}Prx)Ba2Cu3O7 thin films was measured in
the 30-30000 cm-1 range for samples with x = 0 (Tc = 90 K), x = 0.4 (Tc = 35 K)
and x = 0.5 (Tc = 19 K) as a function of temperature in the normal state. The
effective charge density obtained from the integrated spectral weight decreases
with increasing x. The variation is consistent with the higher dc resistivity
for x = 0.4, but is one order of magnitude smaller than what would be expected
for x = 0.5. In the latter sample, the conductivity is dominated at all
temperatures by a large localization peak. Its magnitude increases as the
temperature decreases. We relate this peak to the dc resistivity enhancement. A
simple localization-by-disorder model accounts for the optical conductivity of
the x = 0.5 sample.Comment: 7 pages with (4) figures include
